Generate node-by-node n8n handover notes with GPT-4o-mini and save a separate documented workflow JSON
An n8n builder shares a template that turns workflow exports into a new JSON with AI-written sticky notes and an overview. It helps prepare client handovers while leaving complex-node explanations for human editing.
Evidence: The source shows its work: steps, screenshots, code or data you can inspect.
The business problem
An automation consultant needs readable documentation when handing over or maintaining client workflows.
What was tried
Export the workflow JSON and point Load Workflow at a readable path. The author also describes pasting JSON into a Set node instead of loading a file. Configure OpenAI credentials in the per-node and overview generators. Parse real nodes while excluding old stickies, generate explanations with GPT-4o-mini, arrange notes and nodes, then save a new JSON file. Set project goals and audience in Your Workflow Description; adjust prompts and layout settings as needed. Open the documented export in n8n for review and sharing.
What was reported (not reported)
The author supplies a template and setup steps, without measured documentation accuracy or time savings. A commenter struggled with file loading; the author acknowledged the issue and explained file-path and pasted-JSON options.
Limitations
Old sticky notes are replaced. The overview covers roughly 50 nodes, and complex Code nodes or AI prompts may need manual explanation. n8n needs read/write access to the chosen paths. We read the template instructions but did not execute it or verify generated notes against a live client workflow.
What you need
n8n, a workflow JSON export, OpenAI API credentials and accessible input/output paths, unless using the pasted-JSON input alternative.
