Price a Claude-powered SaaS against the customer's pain, not your API cost
A solo builder of an AI CV tailoring tool explains why cost-plus pricing underprices it and sets $29 to $49 a month by estimating the customer's time cost instead. No results yet.

The business problem
AI API costs per user are pennies, so cost-plus pricing produces a price that looks cheap and ignores the value delivered. A solo founder needs a way to choose a subscription price before there is demand data.
What was tried
The author estimated per-user API cost in a spreadsheet (about $1 to $3 a month for average users, $5 to $8 for heavy ones). Cost-plus at roughly four times cost gave $8 a month, which was rejected. Instead the author picked a main customer persona, a software engineer applying to about 20 roles a month, assumed 30 minutes to tailor each CV, and valued that time at an assumed $50 an hour, giving about $500 a month of pain. A price of $29 to $49 is then about 6 to 10 percent of that pain. The post also argues against founding-member discounts and against justifying price by feature lists, and notes that job-seeker usage is bursty.
What was reported (not reported)
No results reported. There is no revenue, conversion or feedback data; the product had just gone live and the first 100 signups were offered free.
Limitations
An opinion and method post by the seller of the product. The persona, hours and hourly rate are the author's assumptions, nothing was tested, and the author's free launch offer sits awkwardly with the argument against discounting. The publish year is not shown on the page.
What you need
A usage estimate per customer and a clear customer persona with a costly manual task.
